Septum Piercing Guide: Basics, FAQ & Popular Jewelry

What is a septum piercing?

The septum piercing is a piercing which pierces the nasal septum (the center wall of cartilage in your nose between the left and right nostrils).

How much does a septum piercing cost?

$40-50 for the piercing and this typically won't include the cost of the jewelry.

Does a septum piercing hurt?

Pain is on the moderate end for piercings. You'll feel a quick pinch, possibly shed a tear or two from watery eyes and voila you've got a pierced septum!

What gauge body jewelry is worn in a septum piercing?

16G (initial piercing)
18G-14G (healed piercing)

For the initial septum piercing 16 gauge (1.2mm) will be the standard size. After healing it's common to stick with 16 gauge, size down to 18 gauge or size up to 14 gauge. Diameters of jewelry worn in your septum can be anywhere from 8mm-12mm depending on the piercing placement and your anatomy.

What kind of body jewelry can be worn in a septum piercing?

Anything in a circular hoop shape can generally be worn in your pierced septum. Think captive bead rings, circular barbells aka horseshoe rings, segment ring hoops, septum clickers and pinchers. Here's some popular choices below.

Here are four options we recommend for septums!

Circular Barbells aka Horseshoe Rings

Captive Bead Rings aka CBR

Septum Clickers

Segment Rings/Hoops

If you're unsure what jewelry to wear first in your fresh piercing we recommend grabbing both a horseshoe ring (spike or ball whichever you prefer) and a basic hinged segment ring. These are essential for any septum jewelry collection and provide you with a perfect starting point.

These are one of the teams favs for a basic septum! Gold for me bc we fancy, but there are also some other colors available including rainbow, silvertone, black, purple, green or rose gold.

Wanna test the look first?

If you're not ready to take the plunge and get the actual piercing yet, fake septum rings let you test the look beforehand and honestly they look legit as well!
